Will Citalopram, Simvastatin And Gabapentin Cause Seizures?

Hi I am a 44 year old male and been smoking cannabis since the age of 18 for nerve pain in the bottom of my spine I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the age of 32 I suffered a heart attack 7 years ago and then was diagnosed as being type 2 diabetic when I came out of hospital I was told I needed to inject insulin into my body then in December of 2012 I had a fall some sort of blackout in which I broke both my tibula and fibula in 7 places I told Dr s what had happened and had a couple more seizure like episodes up till August 2013 then in August I was found collapsed and I was taken to hospital where I spent 8 days in intensive care unit when I was coming around after about 6 days the neurologist informed me that I shouldn t have been taking insulin I went to see him in September 2013 and was then diagnosed as being epileptic I d had 7 CT scans up to then all came back negative he put me on zonismide and still having the odd 1 so was fitted with a 24 heart monitor that picked up a default and he was talking about fitting me with a pacemaker so I went to see a cardiologist who explained everything then asked me for my recent prescription and told me that it was a medication that I am taking that could be causing my seizures so stopped it and arranged another monitor but I had another seizure not that long ago the cardiologist said it was my heart not my brain. Could it be the medication that I am taking Citalopram, Simvastatin, Nicorandil, Zonegran, Metformin, Gabapentin, Ramipril

Hi,

These medications as such does not have side effect of seizure, but cannabis or combination with drugs produce seizures episodes along with above medication these are tests will help to see cause of pain:
a] TSH
b] 25OH vitamin D levels
c] B12 levels
d] Magnesium [mg]
e] Serum ferritin

I will prescribe few simple things, which produce profound effects if you start them
a] Stop any alcohol, caffeine, non-veg, smoking if you are taking any of these and use salads, fruits [berries, peaches, apples, apricots, pears, oranges, tart cherries], they are good in diabetes too
b] Weight reduction, proper nutrition, regular yoga and treatment of hypertension, dyslipidemia, CVS also, take care
c] Join art of living online breath and meditation workshop [prevents seizure relapse and minimise psychological effects of medicines, have seen actually cure of pain and cannabis problem in few patients]

Follow your current medication, yes, you can take opinion of other cardiologist as well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sunny Madar, General & Family Physician
