Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my 17 year old son caught Impetigo at school, playing and showering in the rugby change rooms and borrowed a towel. Put on erithromycin x 2 which didn t heal. Swab tested and hee now has positive MRSA. Now on 1st lot of Bactrim. He has 5 open sites from small blisters to open abcess which was cellulitic. My question is will this be a lifelong condition for him? Is it like Malaria, which always stays in your body and rears its ugly head each time he is run down? I am scared for him and the bug seems to have the upper hand. Thank you. Alex
Impetigo does not remain in your body like malarial parasites as you have mentioned. Once the infection is cleared, the organism does not live inside your body. In rare cases, impetigo may lead to some scarring. However, this is more often the result of someone scratching at blisters, crusts or sores. The blisters and crusts themselves will not leave a scar if left to heal.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
