Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Will Lonart, Coartem Forte And Antibiotics Effect A Healthy Pregnancy?
I took lonart in my 1st month of pregnancy and took coartem forte in d 2nd month, d third month I was given antibiotics. Is my baby safe? because people said those drugs could have cause damages to my baby since he was just forming at that time. Please tell me what you experience on this!
Incomplete data: Name of the antibiotics prescribed in the third month?
Lonart and Coartem forte contain the same ingredients of Artemether and Lumefantrine which are commonly prescribed to treat chloroquin resistant malaria.
They are actually assigned pregnancy category C by the FDA that means animal studies have revealed evidence of embryo-fetal loss and fetal defects. However, in clinical studies they did not show an increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes or harmful effects on the unborn child.
So, they are found to be safe if taken during pregnancy. Since you did not mention the name of the antibiotics given in third month of pregnancy it is difficult to comment on their safety during pregnancy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
