Will Norethisterone Tablets Induce Periods Or Delay The Same Instead?

Hi, I am 42 years old & I missed my period for 7 days. I did 2 pregnancy tests & both are negative. I went to see a GP yesterday & she prescribed me NORETHISTERONE tablets 5mg for 5 days. She said upon completion of this medication, I have to wait for 5 to 7 days for my period to come. My concerns are : will the NORETHISTERONE tablets induce my period or delay my period instead? Please help. Thank you.

Hi,

The Norethisterone may induce your period. It could delay your period since you should not bleed while taking it. I believe your GP is trying to do a Progesterone Challenge Test. This should cause bleeding once you're done the pills. If you don't, the doctor may want further testing. Most women do bleed right after. Since you won't be having your period while taking the Norethisterone, it may delay your period and reset your cycle.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
