Will Z-pak Cause Loose Stool Accompanied With Cramps?
I have taken Z-pak 5 days and after the 5th day I am having loose stool accompanied with cramps, belching and abdominal pain. It lasted for 2 weeks and never stopped and ask my doctor to examine me however he gave me K-dur 10meq for abdominal cramps and lactos bacillus but 1 week has passed and my symptoms remained the same. I asked another doctor and prescribed me Fkagyl 500mg tid x 2 weeks, no stool exam done and said it might be c-diff colitis. I am now on my 2nd week course of treatment and continues to have loose not formed stool with adominal pain, belching and cramps and these symptoms occurs mostly late in the afternoon.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
It seems the antibiotic had disturbed normal intestinal flora (which protects normal digestion), the lactobacilli. Replacement of bacteria is needful. However, accompanying cramps suggest secondary infection of bowels. Instead of going by trial and error, I would suggest culture and sensitivity of test to recognise causative bacteria and suitable antibiotic. This would help cure it. Light, easily digestible food, regular medication and maintaining electrolyte balance and rest would assist in relief. Please consult your physician / gastroenterologist.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
