Will A 3 Year Old Gain Control On The Urine And Bowels After The Meningeal Surgery?

My daughter is 3 yrs old and she was diagnosed with tethered cord and meningocele. She currently has trouble controlling her urine and bowel movements. She is scheduled for surgery on the 21 st of February. My questions are 1. Will she gain control of her urine and bowel movements back after surgery? 2. Will surgery effect the way she walks at all? 3. How long will she be in the hospital after surgery? 4. What are the chances of something going wrong? 5. Am I sound the right thing by getting this surgery done? My daughter is 3 and she has had a sacral dimple since birth and I never got it checked cause I was never told it could be serious. Well after noticing her going to the bathroom constantly I wanted it checked and I get nothing but bad news. She is such a loving caring beautiful little girl nag I hate to see her go threw all this. She walks just like any 3 yr old she talks like any and she plays and does nothing unusual for a 3 ur old should so now I m scared that this surgery might change all that and that I don t think I can handle. I don t want her to think she is any different then her siblings and to know she is perfect . Please help ease my mind. I just lost my mom and I m only 30 yrs old myself and now I have to go threw all this I am going totally nuts. Thanks

Hi

The diagnosis must be by MRI.

Seems to be a closed meningocoele.

Glad she walks well.

Discuss your questions with the doctor and go for second opinion if you are not convinced.

Difficult to predict without all clinical details and investigations.

Good luck

Dr Uma
