I have Hashimoto's Disease and Hyperinsulinism; Levothyroxine and "Armour" have made no improvements on Thyroid Function...I have been reading about adding Iodine to boost Thyroid Function, and Aloe Vera to stop the auto-immune attacks- any thoughts?
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
In Hashimoto's hypothyroidism you thyroid gland is destroyed by autoimmune process. So your thyroid is no longer producing hormones and so the need for iodine is low. So iodine intake wont boost your thyroid. Alovera is not useful in established hypothyroidism as even if you suppress auto immunity, the thyroid destruction is already over.
You should stick on to your Levothyroxine. I truly agree with you that this is not a cure for hypothyroidism, but it will make your hormone levels normal and stop all problems with hypothyroidism. May be you should increase the dose.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
