Will An Enlarged Heart Of A Baby Cause Future Health Issues?

My 8month old baby boy was diagnosed with enlarged heart while in my womb, suspected from my need to take phenytoin tablets to control epileptic seizures. They said his heart is working as normal and the valves are all normal. Just the heart is big. Will this cause him any health issues later on in life ( lethal heart attacks for example? ) , or is there no problems with enlarged heart from birth? Should he be tested at different times in his life? If so when/ how often?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

If the pumping action and valves are normal, nothing much to worry and routine followup is required. You have to look for other abnormalities as phenytoin can cause multiple congenital problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
