Hello and welcome to HCM, I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.
I understand your query. Exposure to high dose radiation can cause damage to the baby especially when exposed in the first trimester. However use of abdominal shield protects the baby and hence the dose of radiation is not much. Also the baby is protected inside the uterus and receives less dose than the mother. At the most it may lead to decreased fetal growth later. In a few cases however chances of mental retardation are there.
So please discuss this with your gynecologist as well as radiologist regarding how much dose the baby has been exposed to. If the exposed dose is high >50 rads chances of mental retardation and anomalies are higher and may require a termination of pregnancy.
Hope this was helpful. Thanks for using HCM. Have a good day. Dr Nilajkumar Bagde Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology
