Will Blood On Wound Dressing Increase Chances Of Infection?

Hi. So this morning I had a biopsy and the nurse applied a dressing afterwards. I was told to keep the water proof dressing on for three days. I ve noticed that there blood on the inside of the dressing, and my question is: will this blood if left there lead to, or increase the chances of, an infection? Cheers, Kathryn

Hi,

If blood staining inside the wound dressing lead to infection, it's no, it won't. It's very common to bleed inside the dressing. You need to change the dressing after 24 hours to help the wound heal faster.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
