Will Delay In Taking Rabies Vaccination After Dog Bite Cause Any Harmful Effect On Health?
I was bitten by a street dog yesterday at 10 pm and I m yet too see a doctor. Which is due tomorrow since It s over 24 hours delay in taking anti rabbis vaccination .. will this delay harm my health anyway.?I have a inch long take on my thigh and I m very sure the street dog is not vaccinated and possibility of rabbis infection is high.. of very sure the
Hi Jayanthi Kumari,
Thank you for your query,
Delay of seeing a doctor for anti rabies vaccine will delay the chance of getting immunity against rabies and hence indirectly harm to health.Cleaning the wound with soap water immediately after bite is important. TT injection should be taken if it is due.
Vaccine should be taken as early as possible after the bite as the dog is a street dog and risk is high.
Now consult a doctor for immediate vaccination for rabies with full schedule(0,3,7,14 and 28th days)and human antirabies immunoglobulin is also required along with the first dose of rabies vaccine.
Hope i have answrered your query.
Hello
In your case immunoglobulin will also be needed as an inch long wound comes in category 3. Both immunoglobulin and ARV should be given on first day known as '0' dose. If not possible it can be given up to 7 th day, but the earliest you get will be better.
Only one dose of immunoglobulin is required but full vaccination schedule must be taken as dog was not pet one and tracing may not be possible.
You need not worry as according to one study the average
time from exposure to prophylaxis in the U.S.A. in 1980 and 1981 was five days with no rabies
cases resulting in treated individuals

Hi
Thanks for your query.
i advise you to get yourself vaccinated earliest possible, since rabies is a fatal disease, first dose can be taken in first 72 hours but sooner the better.
take vaccine as per schedule that is 0,3,7,14,21.
