Will Taking Cefalexin For UTI Harm Breastfeeding Baby? Any Need To Give Probiotic For Baby?
Hi Dr, My name is Parvathi Raj. I am having urinary track infection and doctor gave me cefalexin tablet (250mg 4 times a day). I have a 10 month old breast feeding baby, will this medicine harm my baby? Should I give a probiotic for my baby while I take this medication? Kindly help Thanks
I completely understand your concern as a mother. Cephalexin is excreted in breast milk and so may alter the bacterial flora of the baby if doses are high. However the amount is very small with the dose that you are taking. So I do not recommend that you start probiotics.
The baby must already be top feeding so give him more top feeds and less of breast feeds if possible. Give probiotics only of there is a loose motion.
You may also avoid breast feeding for a few days until you are taking the drug.
Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM. Feel free to ask any more questions that you may have. Dr Madhuri Bagde Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist
