Will Taking Ciprofloxacin HCL 500mg Help In Curing Diarrhea?
Dear Doctor: I have hac diaharia for four days. I have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and take Delzicol, 4 tablets a day. Last week I started with the diarea and I took immodium 4 a day for 2 days. The amount of times I went to the bathroom lessened, but the diarea continued. I have some ciprofloxacin HCL 500 mg in the house. I want to take this to help get rid of this problem and have a regular bowel movement. Will this help or hurt?
Hi, Thanks for posting your query. I am Dr.Ratnakar and I am pleased to assist you. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic and it is used to treat only diarrhea due to bacterial infection. Since you have a history of ulcerative colitis, the first step is to know whether the diarrheal episodes are a flare up of ulcerative colitis or due to some other cause. You need to consult your gastroenterologist for further evaluation. Regards, Dr.Ratnakar
HI. Ciproflaxacin may help in a doses of 500 mg twice daily, take it if you not known to have allergy - take for 5 days. continue your previous treatment as before. I would still suggest you to go for certain tests like stool routine and microscopy, and a visit to your treating Doctor.
