Will Taking Folic Acid Tablets Accidentally By A Child Cause Any Harm?
Hi,
I take folic acid tablets (5mg) for a deficiency and there's a chance that my niece who is 4 years old has picked the packet up and eaten one thinking it was a sweet. will it harm her? she won't say yes or no and i can't figure out from how many are gone if she's taken one or not. and obviously i'm worried about her now...
The chances of serious side effects from folic acid over-dosage are low as it is a water soluble vitamin.Check the remaining tablets in the bottle to find the approximate amount consumed .High doses of folic acid can sometimes cause abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea etc. So a Gastric lavage (stomach wash) is recommended if evidence of very high dose or if the child is symptomatic. Also encourage her to drink more water to facilitate urinary excretion of folic acid.
