Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
MY GI DOC (NATIONAL JEWISH-DENVER) DID A LIVER ULTRASOUND TO RULE OUT LIVER DISEASE, THE TEST WAS DONE WHEN MY GGT CAME BACK AT 131 . I TAKE NOVASC 10MG; LAMICTAL 400MG AND ZOCOR The Ultra sound indicated no indication of any liver issues and the ALT and AST were in Normal Range. Hep C tests are negative. Can one of the indicated drugs cause GGT elevation. In the Past my primary has never even tested GGT .
Hi & Welcome to HCM. I can understand your concern for the safety of the prescribed medications. Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase (GGT) is the most sensitive indicator of liver damage caused by alcohol and certain drugs. A high level of 131 is therefore suspicious of liver injury resulting from the drugs. Norvasc (Amlodipine) a BP lowering medication is unlikely to cause the GGT elevation. Whereas Lamictal (Lamotrigine) the antiepileptic medication and Zocor (Simvastatin) the cholesterol lowering medication can cause liver injury thus increasing the GGT levels. You need to consult your treating physician to review the prescribed medications and to choose an alternate effective but safer medications to control convulsions and to reduce cholesterol respectively. Hope this will help in reducing the GGT level.
