Will The Dissolvable Stitches Leave Track Marks In The Future?

My 5 year old daughter fell on Wednesday and busted her chin open, requiring 5 stitches at Children s ER. The Dr. said the stitches are dissolvable and if they do not dissolve within 7 days, see her Dr. to have them removed. I am worried about the stitches leaving track marks. Should I see her Dr. after 5 days instead?

Hi,

The type of stitches will not affect the probability of scar formation. Any wound when healed may leave some scar- but when we stitches the wound and secondary infection is prevented, the scar becomes very minimal. No need to go earlier. The most important thing for minimising scar is to keep the wound clean and dry until full healing (to avoid infection), so avoid soiling and apply dressings / antibiotic creams as advised.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
