If you have been a heavy or frequent drinkers suddenly decide to quit "cold turkey? you will experience some physical
withdrawal symptoms -- which range from the mildly annoying to severe and even life-threatening. Psychological symptoms would include nervousness, shakiness, Anxiety, Irritability, rapid emotional changes, depression, fatigue, difficulty thinking clearly, bad dreams. Physical symptoms would include Headache -- general, pulsating, sweating ? In the palms of the hands or the face, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, Insomnia (sleeping difficulty),
Rapid heart rate, eye pupils enlarged(dilated pupils), Clammy skin, Tremor of the hands, Involuntary, abnormal movements of the eyelids. Severe symptoms would include
delirium tremens -- a state of confusion and visual hallucinations, Agitation, Fever, Convulsions, Black outs ? where you might forget what happened during the drinking episode. You would require hospitalization since the various parameters required need to be monitored like Heart rate, breathing, body temperature, and blood pressure, fluids and electrolytes need to be monitored. A drying-out period may be appropriate. No alcohol is allowed during this time.
Medical problems associated with the use of alcohol are
alcoholic liver disease, blood clotting disorders,
alcoholic neuropathy,
alcoholic cardiomyopathy, chronic brain syndromes (such as
Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome), and malnutrition will need to be addressed.
