Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Woke up with some pain in my right ear on Wednesday, Jan 4. By Wednesday night it was pretty bad and also noticed some tooth pain in my upper right molars - the whole area kinda hurt. I was not super congested - just a little stuffy on the right side and when I blew my nose everything was clear, nothing scary green. If I pressed on my teeth it didn't necessarily hurt and I could chew with no problem.
Thursday, Jan 5 morning the pain was now at like a 6, and I was having pretty bad sensitivity to hot or cold in my mouth so I saw a doctor (internal medicine). He looked in my ear and said it was fine and said I had what he thought was a sinus infection. Told me to take Sudafed HCL. I took that with mucinex Thursday and Friday but no real improvement in the pain or even the mild congestion.
Saturday morning woke up with excruciating pain in my back molar on the upper right side - this time it was localized to one tooth (although the whole area aches). Still had pain in my ear. Saw a dentist but the X-ray didn't show an abscess or a fracture or anything. She did say that my molar roots were very long and showed me how they ran up high into my sinuses.
She gave me a script for a z-pack and said if the pain doesn't subside by Monday then it's not a sinus infection and I need to make an appointment with a root canal specialist.
My question is why can't the dentist or the doctor definitively tell me what's going on? Neither seemed really sure. Why would I go see a root canal specialist if the X-ray didn't show anything? The whole right side of my face from my ear to my mouth is throbbing and I can feel my heart beat in my gums. The pain is at a 9 right now.
