Would Administering Medicines Cause Harm To End Stage CA Patient?
i m a nurse and i was taking care of a pt. with a large pleural effusion bilateral end stage ca being the cause. the md did made the pt. npo except for meds but the nurse before me advised that i don t give the meds the pt. was a dnr we were expecting him to pass. later i called the md and she again instructed that the pt. needed his med which he received at 2100. the next morning i gave the pt. back to the same pt. and explained that the md wanted the pt. to receive his meds the pt. died the next day @ approx 1pm and the day nurse felt that it was because the pt. rec d his meds crushed in applesauce and aspirated the pt. talked throughout the night with his wife do u think harm was done with the meds
It sounds like the patient was on comfort measures if they were expected to pass in a short period of time. Often food is given as a comfort measure even at the risk of aspirating. While I don't know what medication was given, it is unlikely that this was the cause of an already expected death.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
