Can I Marry A Thalassemia Patient ?

PLEASE DOCTOR I WANT YOU TO ADVICE ME ON WHAT TO DO. THE WOMAN I WANT TO MARRY HAS Thalassemia CAN I STILL MARRY HER? IS THERE ANY RISK INVOLVED? AND IF ANY, WHAT COULD THEY BE?

Thalassemia is blood disease in which the the haemoglobin present in the Red Blood Cells(RBC) is altered resulting in defective oxygen carrying capacity of the RBC.
There are 2 types. Alpha Thalassemia and Beta Thalassemia.
Most of the times people have Beta Thalassemia.
Again in B thalassemia there are 3 types: Major, Minor and Carrier.
Ask the girl you want to marry if she is minor or carrier.
If she is a carrier and you are not having Thalassemia, there should not be any problem if you marry her. But remember some or your children might be carriers who can lead a near normal life. Hope this has helped you. Regards, Dr.Ismail
