Dermatology, I Have Had A Total Body Itch For Over
dermatology, I have had a total body itch for over a year. First I went to a dermatologist who put me on an antihistamine and triamcinolone acetonide cream. Neither product helped. She thought I must be allergic to one of my medicines. I then went to my family doctor, an internist. He suggested I stop all my meds since none are life saving. He also suggested an antihistamine (Zyrtec). I stopped all meds for 2 weeks with no change in the itch. I have asthma so I thought the doctors who treat that could put their immunology skills to work for me. They ordered a large blood test which showed I was allergic to nothing. they also suggested I stop the red wine I was taking with my evening meal. I stopped for 2 weeks with no relief in the itch. They did prescribe another antihistamine ( Ranitidine or Zantac). With no relief, I went back to the dermatology group and saw a different doctor. He prescribed Doxepin to get me through the night and 40 mg ( 3 for 3 days tapering to 1 per day) of prednisone. This combo seemed to work until I had my next annual physical,my family internist informed me I was diabetic and the prednisone may have been partly responsible for the high glucose levels in my blood. He said I should taper the prednisone to zero over the next few days and ordered a new prescription for the diabetic drug Metformin. After all this I am back to full blown itch mode. The itch is so bad I often make the itch area bleed from my scratching. Any suggestions?
