Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi. i took a fall on the 8th of march -fell off the edge of the road and into a ditch. the jagged edge of the road cut through my shin. cut the skin down to my tendons-did not touch my bone but my fatty tissues were gorged out. the wound was stitched up- took 18 stitches. i was given volteren, amoxicillin and a tetanus shot. stitches were removed on the 17th -wound was wide open and remains this way. very painful.and ever since my leg has been constantly elevated. if i just take a few steps i would have massive swelling and so had to remain in bed with my feet up. as of the 21st wound is being dressed at the clinic 3x a week with the 'wet and dry' method using saline. today when the dressing was removed to be cleaned it looked different. wound was no longer red - looks black and brown -especially on the edges. dr said he was concerned and didnt like how it looked and checked for signs of infection. i had no increase in temperature or pus. so wound is not infected but i was told i need to monitor it and if these signs appear i should return. the wound is also still wide open-an inch in diameter. netting was used today as a filler in the wound before it was covered with the gauze and tape. i was also given diazepam. my questions are-1. why does it take so long to close?- wound is 15 days old. will it close back fully on its own? why is it wide open after having sutures? Should netting have been used sooner? what does the wound being black and brown mean? wound still swells if i walk, have to return to work next tuesday- will it be ok by then? is there anyway to safely accelerate healing? will wound cure leaving a gaping hole in my leg?- as it is over the bone and no flesh is connecting nor do they seem to be growing towards each other to connect. What kind of scar will i be left with? i dont have keloids. Thanks so much for your responses in advance.
