mom had femur bone fracture last October. initially it did not show in xray so she was in pain for about 6 days after which re did xray and fracture was discovered. she has under gone 2 surgery. one to fix fracture by putting plate. this got infected so underwent 2nd surgery within a weeks time to remove that plate, however incharge surgeon drilled 2 screws in her bone to keep it intact. concerned surgeon gave hope that this would fix the fracture and she would be able to regain her feet momentum in just few months. latest update screw has become loose and she is on bed for last 5 months. Because she is 63 years old, obese and diabetic and also has cretanine, it would be really immature on us if we kept on putting her under knife. we have visited several surgeons but just adds to confusion. some of them suggested that they will operate and during that time would find out how much infection and then either try to re fit another plate and if not then remove the screws and will conduct fusion in the same operation. Some surgeons adviced do cut part of that bone and replace with artificial one etc. now one surgeon adviced that first step is to take screw out as that's what causing infection. so remove those screws and wait for 6 to 8 weeks and after that depending on the status he would either try to fit plate or if not then fuse it, which means 2 more operations. please advice who to believe and whats the best procedure to follow in above circumstances.thanks in advance. appreciate all efforts.
