My Husband 56 Year Old Male, Had Swollen Feet/ankles About

my husband 56 year old male, had swollen feet/ankles about two weeks ago which resolved itself with the help of lisonopril and pain meds. he is on metformin for pre-diabetes symptoms. he now has pretty severe pain in only one ankle (or general area) joint without the swelling. question is besides his general prac. should he see an internist or a specialist? what specialist?
