Taking Ferrous Sulphate, Vitamin C For Anemia. Will Lisinopril, Metoprolol, Prednisone Interfere With Iron?
I am a 61 year old male that has been anemic for 4 + years, My Hemotologist whom I see on a regular basis has had me on and off iron supplements countless times. I am now back on 325 mg of Ferrous Sulfate 3 times a day along with 250 mg of vitamin C with each iron dose. My question is should I take the iron with or without food and will Lisinipril, Metoprolol, ( which I take for high blood pressure), Prednisone and Methatrexate ( which I take for CPPD disease) and Zinc/Magnesium/Vitamin B-6 ( which I take to help me sleep) interfere with the iron or visa-versa?
Hello, Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum. Ferrous sulphate absorption is enhanced by Vitamin C . You are taking many drugs so I will try to explain you the interaction of drugs with each other as, Iron preparation (ferrous ) interact with methotraxate and interfere with absorption . So iron preparation will reduce effect of methotraxate. Prednisolone decrease clearance of methotraxate i.e.retention of methotaxate in body. Lisinopril may enhance the adverse effects of ferric gluconate ( iron preparation). Zinc , magnesium & B 6 also helps in absorption of iron , you can use safely. Consult your treating physician and get his opinion regarding Methotraxate preparation ( as this is most important drug for treatment ). Hope I have answered your question. If further any question I will help. Good luck. Dr. HET
