Idiopathic Peripheral Periphlebitis

Idiopathic Peripheral Periphlebitis also called Eales Disease is a rare disease of eye characterized by sudden loss of vision, due to inflammation of the blood vessels of the eye leading to recurrent hemorrhage into the eyeball as well as oozing of clear thick fluid from inside of the eyeball.

 

Idiopathic Peripheral Periphlebitis or Eales disease is a rare disorder of the blood vessels of the eye occurring more commonly in males than females. It appears as a white haze around the outer coat of the veins in the retina due to inflammation of the veins resulting in blurring of the vitreous hemorrhage following inflammation.

Idiopathic Peripheral Periphlebitis

Symptoms

  • Male predominance
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Sudden impairment of vision
  • Scotoma
  • Floating spots in the eyeball
  • Impaired ability to control voluntary movements
  • Pins and needles sensation
  • Speech disorder
  • Inflammation of the blood vessels of retina
  • Retinal hemorrhage
  • Detached retina

Diagnosis

  • History of systemic diseases like Hypertension, Tuberculosis and symptoms are suggestive
  • The signs are confirmed by Ophthalmoscope examination,
  • Blood investigations for signs inflammations.

Treatment

The treatment includes

  • Treatment of the underlying systemic disease appropriately
  • Symptomatic treatment in mild cases
  • Interventional and Laser therapy may benefit the Eales disease retinopathy.
  • The prognosis depends on the extent of retinal detachment and neurological involvement.
