Role of vomiting in respiratory mucous excess

Chest congestion is a common issue with respiratory illnesses. Vomiting is a natural reflex in response to excess mucous production in bronchi and lungs which helps in clearing the mucous. Vaman dhauti is a process in which vomiting is induced with warm salty water.

Vaman Dhauti, also known as Kunjal Kriya, is one of the shat kriya that involves vomiting to cleanse the upper digestive tract. It is meant to simulate the real life vomiting with the help of salty water. It can be learnt from yoga experts or naturopathy doctors. It should not be done if stomach is upset or gastric ulcers.

Benefits

·        Removes gas and finds benefit in acidity, and indigestion

·        Throws up mucous during sore throat and lung congestion

·        Helps reduce ama that may develop due to undigested food

·        Reduces stress, fatigue and heaviness

·        Rejuvenates skin health

·        Helpful in managing conditions like obesity, diabetes, dyspepsia and constipation

How to do it

·        Drink 3–4 glasses quickly of lukewarm water and add salt to make it little salty like tears

·        Sit in squatting position with your soles on the ground and knees bent

·        Insert your right index and middle fingers as far down your throat as possible

·        Vomit the water until you feel the water has come out entirely

·        Relax in Shavasana for about 5–10 minutes and eat easily digestible foods like khichdi and juices during the day.

·        If something feels stuck in throat after Vaman kriya then drink hot water

When to do it

You can do Vaman Dhauti once or twice a week on an empty stomach in the morning.
