What Causes Vomiting While Having Post Nasal Drip?

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: My wife is dry vomiting. She has post-nasal drip. As she lies down, she coughs and the coughing leads to dry-vomiting (mostly mucous). Stomach cramps follow, and she puts Levsin under her tongue. She is taking meds for heart failure. Just had a bi-ventrical pacemaker installed with a defibrillator. Can she take benedryl? She is also on Keppra for seizure disorder. 3000 mg/day

Brief Answer:
Benadryl interacts with both the medications she is taking

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you using HCM to post your question. I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

I suspect that the vomiting it is from the post nasal drip secretions.

I would not recommend benadry because it has a moderate interaction with Keppra and with Levsin as well.

I would say that it is very important to drink plenty of fluids, often but small amounts so it wont cause stomach distention.
Also, take an anti-acid if has stomach pain.

Hope this is helpful.

She has also been lactose-intolerant and has been diagnosed with IBS and GERD. Is lactose-free milk ok with these conditions?
Besides chicken and fish, what other sources of good protein are there that are generally compatible with these conditions?

Brief Answer:
Eggs, beans, veggies, nuts, ect

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the follow-up question.

Yes, so probably the dry vomiting comes either from post nazal drip or Gerd.
Your wife should avoid milk as she probably is doing and take Omeprazole 20 mg to help with Gerd and the mucous vomiting reflex.

She can eat everything that is rich in protein except dairy products, for example eggs, nuts, beans, ect. Of course lots of water too and and fruits and vegetables.

Hope this is helpful.
