Uveitis is the inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, uvea. Uveitis needs urgent treatment to control the inflammation.
Most of the common type of uveitis is anterior type called as anterior uveitis. It will subside if it is treated properly. Uveitis is mainly associated with various systemic disease.
Anterior uveitis: It is the inflammation of iris and anterior chamber. The symptoms of anterior uveitis are red eye, posterior surface of cornea.
Intermediate uveitis or pars planitis: In this there will be inflammatory cells in vitreous cavity.
Posterior uveitis: In this there is inflammation of retina and choroid
Pan uveitis: It is the inflammation of all the layers of the uvea.
Signs and symptoms
Redness of eye
Blurring of vision
Excessive sensitivity to the light
Photophobia
Dark, floating spots along with the visual field
Eye pain
On examination there may be dilated ciliary vessels, presence of cells and flare in the anterior chamber and keratic precipitates on the posterior surface of the cornea.
Treatment:
Glucocorticosteroid steroids are used either as topical eye drops or as oral therapy with predinisolone tablets.
Topical cyclopegics like atropine, homatropine
Injection of PSTTA can be used to decrease the swelling of the eye.
Antimetabolite medications like methotrexate are often used.
