18 Years Old. Suffering From Type 1 Diabetes. How To Get Cured?
My brother is suffering from type 1 diabetes, but unfortunately he is just 18 and does not the understand the risks involved in diabetes and in a shy he is not checking blood sugar levels nor he is compliant with insulin. How to overcome it?
Thanks for writing in to Healthcare Magic!
It is indeed challenging for a young chap to accept that he is diseased.
In fact he has taken it as if he is incapacitated or disabled that is why he is embarrassed to manage it or show it off to others.
This is a product of negative attitude!
Get him counselled by a psychiatrist- it matters, must under stand that he should be proud of the fact that he is managing a menace and he is heavy on the challenges of life. He is living without complications must be his achievement rather then feeling low all the while and falling prey of the diabetic complications.
He should understand that God was kind enough to give him good mind, good body, good limbs. There are people who are born with serious external limitations and nothing can make that up.
There are people who have got good body but no opportunities so all in vain.
On the other side he must understand the darker side of the ignorance in managing this disease- It can cause life threatening complications like Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Low immunity and infections, Long term complications like triopathy affecting vision, kidneys and neuropathy. Complications may be loss of vision, renal failure needing every second day dialysis in the hospital, loss of limb due to amputation.
He should manage the diabetes in advance because once these problems start they only progress.
He should take the straight forward and simplest treatment the insulin replacement strictly on regular basis and check enough control of the blood glucose levels.
He should not try any shortcut like balancing the glucose with bitters(karela/pumpkin and that sort of rubbish things), they are all XXXXXXX and do not bear any logic in real medicine.
If you have any further query please let me know I would try to answer it for you.
Wish you a great health!
