Are Prickly Sensation And Pain On Fingers Symptoms Of Multiple Sclerosis?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: My daughter is 47 years old and has been experiencing prickly sensations in her finger tips and the backs of her fingers. She said the pain is severe when she brushes the backs of her fingers against anything...also she said it's like she has brushed up against a cactus with the tiny prickly 'hairs" on it. Is this a symptom of MS?My husband had MS...but she is adopted. He never had that symptom, but from what I've read it could be a symptom of MS?The reason they checked her for MS last year was because she was experiencing numbness in her right arm and fingers and numbness in the toes on her left foot. She had trouble putting one leg in front of the other in a toe to heel walk. They did an MRI and ruled out MS. She is a photographer and carries a heavy camera bag on her right shoulder. The symptoms seemed better when she changed her diet and ate more healthy...

Brief Answer:
Unlikley to be MS!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this abnormal sensation that your daughter has been experiencing. This is very non suggestive of a possible MS. I think the fact that she brushed her hand against the cactus flower is a more plausible explanation for this. I understand your heightened concern about MS as your husband had to deal with. This is not the case with her. Even if she were not adopted, a previous scan that showed no MS and symptoms not suggestive of MS makes this less likely. Keep me updated as her symptoms evolve.

I hope this helps. I wish her well. Thank you for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

No, she did not brush against a cactus...she said it FELT like that. (We live in the desert and she has had contact with cacti in the past so she knows what that feels like!) She lives in Florida now.

Do you have any idea what could have caused this? She is on a photo shoot now and when she presses on the "click" button with her index finger it is painful...
