Are There Any Drugs To Reduce Weight?
Question: I have ADD. I was in a study a few years back and took medication for years. The one that worked the best was Concerta. About two years ago my insurance stopped paying for the medication. The alternative (which cost the same) had to be taken 3 times a day and as having ADD that didn't work well to remember to take. So I just quit taking medication. I have done O.K., but found I was gaining weight. Last check-up at my regular Dr. he said that Concerta was originally a diet drug. Because it was time released I think it keep my blood level more constant. I try to diet and work out 4-5 times a week in at a Cross Fit class and play volleyball. I still can't seem to keep the weight down as I did when on Concerta. I have never thought of taking a diet drug. Are there any that are safe and/or you would recommend? I am going to try to get on Concerta again if my insurance UHC to cover, but don't think they will. (around $300 a month).
Brief Answer:
orlistat and topiramate are the options
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
Other than concerta, orlistat and topiramate are the safe options for weight reduction. If you can get concerta, it is very good option.
Orlistat causes oily spotting, flatulence, fatty/oily stool, increased defecation, fecal incontinence, nausea and vomiting as common side effects.
Topiramate can cause dizziness, fatigue, ataxia and other side effects which may limit its use.
