Are Uterine Cancer And Adenocarcinoma Related To Each Other?
Question: I am a 57 yo female that had a total hysterectomy July last year. This was precipitated by both an abnormal pap and a subsequent D &C with abnormal results. As a precaution the hysterectomy was performed and a cancerous polyp was found and I was given a diagnosis of Uterine cancer Stage 1a. No further treatment necessary but a close watch. All exams have been normal.
Here is my concern, recently I had a colonoscopy and a small polyp w an adenocarcinoma was discovered.
Gastro surgeon felt tumor was removed . No further treatment needed.
My question is are these related? and should there be more aggressive followup with either?
My oncologist specializes in gyne-do I need a different specialist added to my care team?
Many thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
these are unrelated
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
These two small cancers are most probably unrelated. These arise inside the organs, affecting the inner lining only. So they can't pass from one organ to another while affecting just the inner layer without affecting the outer ones.
Follow up should be standard only. For the clinic polyp, another colonoscopy in 3-6 months then at longer intervals should be considered. Gyne oncologist and gastroenterologist with onc experience can do the followup.
Overall, there are less chances of recurrence.
Hope this helps.
Regards
