Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Severe indigestion is a chronic problem and prevention is the best treatment. The main factors responsible for indigestion are-
1.Overeating.
2. Eating hurriedly without chewing properly.
3.Food allergies like beans, onions, etc.
4.Lack of exercise.
5. Improperly cooked food.
Try to avoid all these causative factors.
Avoid overindulging in alcohol, drinking carbonated beverages or eating while stressed, since all of these can just worsen the problems
The treatment in severe cases, where belching is lasting more than 2 days would be with prescription medications which can be provided by your primary care provider.
In the mean time, Use of OTC medications mentioned below can be used to have some relief.
1. Activated charcoal (Charcocaps) , will absorb the excess gas produced.
2. Antacids, such as Di-Gel, Maalox Anti-Gas, and Mylanta Gas, allow gas to be belched away more easily.
3. Food enzymes, such as Beano, which help break down the sugars found in vegetables and grains, can be added to foods that cause you to have gas.

I hope this answers your query effectively.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

Thanks Dr. XXXXXXX

I have few more queries regarding this problem

I have a very normal diet as in I eat home cooked food mostly and I exercise 3-4 times a week. I will still take all the precautions that you have mentioned but I have few doubts such as:-

1.Can drinks like Tea /coffee also responsible for increasing acidic gases in the stomach I am asking this because sometimes after having tea I get acidic re-flux back with the burp as in it feels like the tea is coming back from my stomach.

2. Can excessive gastric problem effect your heartbeat or might cause a headache on left side of the head.

3. Can I take pre and probiotic tablets to cure this thing apart from OTC medicines that u have recommended.

4. I don’t have any food allergies but if you could suggest me some food products that I should completely avoid to get better.

Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for writing again.

1. Yes, drinks like tea, coffee, colas, alcohol all increase gastric acidity and cause indigestion. It is best to avoid these as far as possible.

2. Excessive gastric acidity causing reflux can cause palpitations and sometimes headache too.

3. Pre and probiotic tablets will also help in better digestion of your food; thus reducing your problem.

4. Some foods to be avoided include certain fermentable short-chained carbohydrates that are degradable by intestinal bacteria yielding large amount of gases, like hydrogen or carbon dioxide, thus causing belching and bloating. Such food include
a. White bread, pasta, pastries, cookies, onions, asparagus, leeks, garlic, chicory roots and chicory based coffee substitutes.
b. Legumes (soy, beans, chickpeas, lentils), cabbage and brussel sprouts.
c. Honey, dried fruits like prunes, figs, dates, or raisins, apples, pears, sweet cherries, peaches, agave syrup, watermelon, papaya.

Hope my answer is helpful.
