Can Adipex-P, Zoloft, Contrave And Metoprolol Be Taken Together?
I have been trying to lose 15 lbs for some time now. I went to a doctor yesterday and got 37.5 Adipex P. I am on metoprolol er 25 mg once a day, Zoloft 60 mg once a day and contrave 8-90 mg twice a day. I know adipex raises blood pressure, but is it dangerous to take these medications together?
I would recommend to find other alternative strategies instead of Adipex.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would explain as follows:
As Adipex P is a sympathomimetic drug (it release norepinephrine in the central nervous system, as well as norepinephrine, epinephrine, and to a lesser degree serotonin and dopamine in peripheral nervous system), it may have important consequences regarding blood pressure control (it may lower the efficacy of prescribed therapy, as well as exacerbate hypertension).
From the other part, serious concerns have been raised about cardiac adverse effects of Adipex (phentermine).
Arrhythmia (especially life-threatening arrhythmia, such as ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, etc), uncontrolled hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, and especially heart valve damages have been reported when Adipex (phentermine) has been used alone, or in combination with other hunger suppressants.
Also, an important adverse interaction has been noted when Adipex has been used concomitantly with Zoloft (sertraline). They may exert increased toxicity of each other, and may predispose for a life-threatening complication, such as serotonin syndrome. It is not recommended their concomitant use.
Regarding the rest of your actual therapy (Contrave, Dexilant), no any important and serious adverse interactions has been noted.
So, to conclude, to cut it clear and short for you, though Adipex is an approved drug to be used for a short period of time in treating obesity (in conjunction with other therapeutic option, healthy diet, physical activity, etc), if I were your doctor, I would not recommend you to continue Adipex (because of potential serious cardiac effects, other systemic side effects, and because of the serious interaction with Zoloft, and subsequent serotonin syndrome).
Hope to have been helpful to you.
