Question: Is it safe to take 500MG of Clarithroymc and 500 MG of Cephalexin at the same time for tooth infection. My right jaw is swollen all the way to my eye and my top lip is swollen. I have been on it for 3 days now, when will the swelling go away? Can I also take Ibuprofen with it?

Hi,

I have been asked to answer this question from this site's administrator as the doctor you requested for wasn't available despite repeated calls. I'll take this opportunity to help you with your concern.

It is definitely safe to take clarithromycin and cephalexin together. They don't interact significantly with each other or with the body. I assume that you don't have any heart rhythm abnormality which is a relative contraindication to use of clarithromycin. Antibiotic should be taken along with an antiinflammatory pain killer - Ibuprofen in this condition.
That being said, I don't usually prefer this combination to treat dental infection. My choice is a combination of penicillin (amoxicillin or ampicillin) to cover for gram positive organisms and metronidazole (to treat anaerobic infection).

Further with swelling as large as yours, there is an every possibility of abscess collection. And such abscess collection should be drained for complete treatment.
Therefore in all probabilities it is a must to see a dentist.

Hope this helps.
