default
Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: Can I take DayQuil before knee surgery. I have a slight cold this morning and have a procedure at 1:00 this afternoon. I had to wait a month to get the surgery scheduled for a torn meniscus and I am in excruciating pain and do not want to delay the surgery

Brief Answer:
No and no

Detailed Answer:
first it is very hazardous to take anything by mouth before surgery as you can vomit it, have it go into the lungs and cause pneumonia or even drowning.
furthermore the ingredients in cold medicine interfere...slightly....with an anesthetics. this second is minor, but not worth it. third, I've had two young patients with colds in the last three days who should not get surgery because the cold did way more lung irritation than what they expected!
make surgeon aware of all medicines and conditions even minor ones and don't blame me if they reschedule.

but I willtake credit if the surgeon thanks you
