Can Flagyl And Cipro Be Taken When Suffering From Diverticulitis?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: Hi - I am in the middle of a diverticulitis episode. I was out of town when I got it. I had left over Flagyl and began taking it. I took it for 5 days. When I got back to town I got another prescription of both Flagyl and Cipro. The combination of taking both made me feel constantly nauseous. The Flagyl was accumulative in my system; it was getting more and more difficult not to regurgitate. I then couldn't keep anything down, not even water. I spoke to the doctor and she said that I may have had enough Flagyl and to take the Cipro only to the end. I have two days left of the Cipro and I still feel minor lower left abdominal pain. Is there a naturopathic solution as an alternative to the Flagyl and Cipro? Additionally, if I have taken a full dose of Cipro and it is not gone is there a natural alternative to begin?

Brief Answer:
Naturopathic alternatives are not safe in diverticulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam.

I understand your concern.

Yes certainly Flagyl is known to cause some degree of nausea.

The lower pain abdomen in your case implies inadequate degree of response of diverticulitis to standard antibiotics.

Naturopathic management is not clinically proven to offer relief in case of diverticulitis.

More over they can falsely mask the signs perforation in any case.

Hence I do not prescribe them to my patients.

Adequate analgesia can be obtained through use of smooth muscle relaxants like Buscopan/Hyosamine bromide one tab once a day for 3-5 days.

The associated nausea can be controlled through use of tab pantocid 40 mg once a day on empty stomach until the completion of the course of antibiotics.

Please note the above mentioned drugs have to be taken under strict medical prescription.

Thank you.

The following:

tab pantocid 40 mg once a day on empty stomach until the completion of the course of antibiotics.

1. Can these be obtained over the counter?
2. I have 4 Cypro tablets left and 8 days of Flagyl. If I get the pantocid and Buscopan/Hyosamine bromide today, would you recommend I begin again taking the Flagyl and Cypro together as prescribed today and tomorrow and then discontinue as the Cypro will be completed; or continue to take the Flagyl for a few days afterward. Does this not clear up without taking them both at the same time?

Brief Answer:
Continue both for 2 days and then Flagyl alone for next 6 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Yes these drugs can be obtained over the counter.

Its advisable to take both Cipro and Flagyl together for 2 days until completion of Cipro and then continue Flagyl alone for next 6 days afterwards.

This will be an effective regimen to clear up.

Thank you.
