Can Gabapentin Cause Pancreatitis?
Yesterday I was given a prescription of gabapentin for foot neuropathy.
25 years ago when I had my gall bladder removed, I had a pancreatitis infection
which was treated at that time. Recently when I had a bad sinus infection I was
given a steroid and ended up in the emergency room with a pancreatic infection
and told I must never take steroids, My question is could there also be a problem
w/ taking gabapentin in regards to my pancreas?
XXXX
very very small risk
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic
Pancreatitis is not listed as a FDA noted common side effect in their professional data on gabapentin. This means that it was not seen during the drug trials.
It is also not listed as a possible common side effect on medscape which is also a professional directed site intended to inform doctors about potential effects of medications.
It has been assessed as very rare cause of inflammation of the pancreas, seen in less than 0.1% of persons (this means less than 1 out 1000 persons). This would have been seen after the clinical trials meaning after the medication was used in the population as a whole.
The fact that it occurred in 1 out of 1000 persons means that it is not likely to happen but there is a very very small risk.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
XXXX
