default
Posted on Tue, 27 Oct 2015
Question: Can genotropin cause glucose intolerance? I've been on Genotropin for past 5 years (large weight gain), tested and found to have GHI.
Within approx 5 months of Genotropin lost all wt. & felt good again.
Last 3 yrs started putting on weight again (40lbs to date). Tested for Glucose intolerance and am pre-diabetic. Could the genotropin have caused glucose intolerance?

Brief Answer:
it is possible

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The increased blood sugar may be due to a combination of factors.

Weight gain is likely one of the causes of the glucose intolerance, this can occur with low growth hormone levels.
Weight gain is a very very common cause of glucose intolerance because the build up of fat causes the body to become resistant to the action of insulin.

Low growth hormone cause a loss of muscle and a build up of fat so it is unusual that you are gaining fat with the replacement unless your levels are still low.

Growth hormone, as you know opposes insulin and can also potentially cause increased blood sugar.
Increasingly , according to a medical article (can provide name if you wish), since it increases the muscle and decreases the fat, in the short term may actually help persons with diabetes and abdominal fat.

It decreases the abdominal fat and can make a person more sensitive to insulin

This is in the short term, in the long term though, there may be an increase in blood sugar.

Summary: (1) the weight gain and the growth hormone replacement may have contributed
(2)unusual to have weight gain with growth hormone, may need to check levels

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
