Can HIV Be Trasmitted Through A Massage?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Sep 2014
Question: Hi doc,

Yesterday i went to a chinese massage parlour for the first time and the masseuse looked old and she was kind of sweating. I got a hand job from here. I am not sure if she is hiv+ or if her hands were bleeding as the room was dark. She used oil to rub on my penis and she may have touched the top Of my penis too. I am very worried if i have been hiv infected. Can you please give me a confirmation on this. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
HIV risk is negligible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

First of all she might not necessarily be a HIV positive woman.
Even if she is positive she would not have opted for a massage with the bleeding hands. If there is minor abrasion it is quite casual and it is not serious.
In a family who cares for a HIV positive individuals or in home in which the HIV positive orphan children are being cared or in a clinic where knowingly or unknowingly so many HIV patients are being cared, without infecting the care providers where there are so many possibilities explained by you are happening on day today life.
More over just a contact with the infected blood over your penis could not be able to produce an infection due to so many reasons like an abrasion is needed for the virus to gain entry and virus can not live outside the body for not more than few seconds etc.
So the HIV risk is almost negligible in the way you explained in a massage parlor.
Nothing to worry.

Thanks doc. When you say almost negligible do you mean there is still a 5 perc chance i can get infected? Do I really need to worry about this and get myself tested. If you could confirm on this it would be great. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Negligible refers to less than one percent.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Medicine is not Mathematics to have a constant answer.
Negligible means it is lesser than 1% and not as 5% mentioned by you.

Testing for HIV and getting ruled out HIV possibility totally would relieve your mental tension.
Otherwise anything in future might be correlated and attributed to the incident and leads to confusion and tension.
So I would recommend you to get tested and rule out both HIV 1&2 for your mental satisfaction.

Brief Answer:
Testing after 12 weeks more conclusive.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome once again.
HIV DNA PCR would be reliable and more conclusive by 3-4 weeks after the risk activity.
But it will usually ruled out HIV 1 infection only which is more common throughout world other than in XXXXXXX (99%). A combo test or any antibody detecting test would rule out both HIV 1&2 only after the completion of the window period that is after 8-12 weeks.
Till then your sexual activities may preferably be a protected one.

Brief Answer:
Test is not really need for you.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

There is no need for a HIV test actually for you as per the risk concerned your activity.
If you are so confident that you would not be disturbed in future you can skip the test.
