Can HIV, Chlamydia Or Gonorrhea Be Contracted Through Protected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Jul 2023
Question: I had an condom protected vaginal sex with an unknown CSW 39 days ago. On 39 Days, got tested and results were for HIV 1/2 antibody + p24 (CLIA) non reactive. RPR non reactive (carbon flocculation), TPHA negative, HBsAG surface antigen (CLIA), Hepatitis C non reactive (CLIA), Herpes IgG for both 1 and 2 non reactive (CLIA). Just before the test was taking levofloxacin and loratidine for some acute ear infection.

Does the above tests and waiting period are conclusive and can I move on with my normal family life?

I did not tested chlamydia and gonorrhea and does it pose a serious risk for sex with my wife?

Does my taking medicine like this will have any effect on result?

Please provide me your overall opinion in my situation.

Brief Answer:
You are free from HIV 1 infection and Syphilis

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

You had a protected exposure so the risk of HIV is almost nil.
You had your tests done on 39th day after exposure. Your CLIA test is a 4th generation DUO test. It consists of two parts.
1. Antigen (P24) detection part is sensitive by 7 days after the exposure and becomes confirmatory by 3-4 weeks. But it could detect only HIV 1 infection.
2. Antibody detection (HIV 1 and 2) will become conclusive after widow period
(6-8 weeks, sometimes after 12 weeks). So your tests had ruled out HIV 1 infection and syphilis beyond any doubt.

Don't worry about other STDs and HIV 2 as your exposure was a protected one. HIV 1 infection is common among to the extent of more than 99% throughout the world except certain pockets of Africa, so there is nothing to worry.

Your drugs (Levofloxacin and Loratidine) would have no effect on your tests as they are neither virucidal effect nor Treponemal (syphilis) effect.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dear Doctor,

Thanks for your reply. What about Herpes 1 and 2 testing after 39 days along with Hepatitis B. Is it considerably conclusive after 39 days of testing?

What about HPV? and Clamydia or Gonorrohea?

I have checked the condom after exposure with water and it was intact. My wife is joining me do you think to have a normal sexual relationship after this incident.

Thanks again,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Risk for STD is unlikely.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

As I had mentioned already, you need not bother about STD because your exposure was a protected one.

Herpes Simplex IgG would indicate an old infection, not an early infection. IgM indicates a recent infection. You had seen IgG only.

Similarly, hepatitis detection also might take a bit late. So these tests done on 39th day cannot be taken as the final one. Test for HPV is not available with all laboratories. As long as there are no symptoms, tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia are not necessary. You had protected exposure. So you need not worry about the tests.

Hope I have answered your query.
