Can Losartan Potassium And Amlodipine Besytate Be Taken While Treating Kidney Disease?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Jan 2017
Question: I have just been given two additional heart meds. I have been taken carvedilol for several years. It has kept my blood pressure and heart rate at around 135\65-60. Also I was taking losartan/hct, which I was taken off because of kidney problems. The two additional drugs are Losartan Potassium and AmLODIPine Besytate. Is this an overkill of meds? Do I need this much meds when my blood pressure seems to be under control. Will these additional meds help with the kidney problems? The kidney problems were caused by DAYPRO given to me for arthritis.

Brief Answer:
Losartan & carvedilol are very good medicines

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist.
Losartan & carvedilol are very good medicines for bp control which also help to prevent future cardiac event.
Actually your bp which is controlled was controlled by 3 medicines together (Losartan, HTZ & carvedilol). Now it is controlled, so what we do is step down medicines one by one. So this is what your cardiologist must also be thinking & has given you 3 antihypertensives.
But as you are saying you are having a kidney abnormality, than taking losartan will be risky. If S.Creatinine (part of kidney function test) is >1.5mg/dl than we taper losartan & if it rises than we stop it all together.
Amlodipine is a medicine which will not affect the kidney function.
Also Carvedilol is a very mild antihypertensive, so only this will not control the bp much & bp will rise gradually.
So its logical to give these together but do check your KFT & bp regularly so that losartan could be stopped in case KFT worsens.
If you have any further queries, I'll be more than happy to help.
Wishing you a good health.
