Can MRI Be Done For Assessment Of Lymph Nodes In Groin Area?

My doctor wants me to get a ct scan of my abdomen because the ultrasound showed that the lymph node in my groin area is slightly swollen. I have had pain and discomfort which I thought was my bladder area for over a month. All urine tests show no bacterial cultures.
They suspect some kind of infection. I do not want a ct scan because of the radiation.
Can they get the information they need from an MRI? I am requesting that they do the MRI instead.
Thank you.
CT scan is ideal for initial lymph node assessment
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing to HCM
I agree with your doctor.Contrast CT scan(Abdomen) is ideal for assessment of lymph nodes in initial stage.
In CT scan,we can evaluate entire abdomino-pelvic lymph node system where as MRI can miss small lymph nodes.MRI has limitations in detecting small lymph nodes due to partial volume averaging(It is a technical limitation).
Don't worry about radiation dose.Total CT dose in CT scan of abdomen is far below than the hazardous limit. Now a days,Multislice sprial CT scan machines are available which give very less radiation dose to the patients.
Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
Further queries are most welcome.
