Can Metformin Cause Renal Dysfunction?
Question: Does metformin have any significant effect on renal function? Creatinine? urine Ph?
Brief Answer:
No. It does not.
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for writing to hcm. Metformin doesn't have any adverse effects on renal function or creatinine or urine ph. However if a patient has significant renal failure the drug is not used. In diabetes the most common cause of renal failure is diabetes itself as its one of the complications of diabetes. Its not the drug which causes kidney disease as its quite commonly assumed. Take care. Regards.
