What Are The Symptoms For Bilateral Medullar Nephrocalcinosis And Treatment?

I just discovered through an ultrasound that it is *not* kidney stones that has been causing my pain for 3 weeks, but bilateral medullar nephrocalcinosis. My primary care physician is working on a referral to a nephrologist, as we live in a very remote area & not specialists work here. It may be weeks before I can see a specialist. Is there any home care that you could advise, between now & when I see a nephrologist to discover the actually *cause* of the nephrocalcinosis? And what are warning signs that I should go directly to the hospital (i.e. renal failure)?

Hi,

Medullary calcinosis is deposition of excessive calcium in the medullary region (Innermost region) of kidney. It is due to some underlying disease like Renal tubular acidosis, hyperparathyroidism, osteoporosis, hypercalcemia. Treatment lies in treatment of the underlying cause, attempts to bring the calcium level down, early clearance of excessive calcium from the body.

In your case, till the diagnosis of underlying pathology is found, you should take certain home measures to stop the more deposition of calcium and early clearance of calcium from the body. Normally, it is an insidious disease, not taking a terminal course very fast. Still, if you find symptoms of excessive blood in urine, continuous vomiting for a persistent long time, continuous non-relieving pain in abdomen or continuously high fever with rigors, then it may be an indication of immediately going to ER.

In the mean time you can get your condition of kidneys and progression / regression of disease, evaluated regularly by blood tests for calcium level, presence of blood in urine, blood urea, creatinine levels etc. Meanwhile, the home care you may be to avoid milk and milk products. Avoid high sodium foods like sea food.

Take low potassium food like carrot, cabbage and apple etc. Avoiding fried foods or other high fatty foods. Protein intake should also be moderately regulated, so that it does not cause heavy load on kidney for clearance of protein break down products. Above all adequate intake of fluids, so that flushing of kidneys and easy clearance of various toxic products from kidneys is assured.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
