Can Metronidazole Be Taken 24 Hours After Alcohol Consumption?
Question: I had 4 drinks by noon yesterday, then stopped. Can I begin metronidazole by noon today? (24 hrs)

Brief Answer:
it's probably OK
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
it's not very easy to answer but 24 hours would be OK for many individuals. It depends a lot on your metabolism. The problem is that even low concentrations of alcohol may cause interaction with metronidazole so all of it has to be eliminated to avoid the side effects. For most persons 24 hours should be enough though. If you have liver disease then perhaps you should consider delaying it a little bit more. It also depends on the reason you have to take it. For a serious infections you shouldn't risk waiting. For a mild infection (Helicobacter pylori eradication for example) it can be delayed safely.
I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!

Brief Answer:
Cl. difficile may be or become serious
Detailed Answer:
You're welcome!
Cl. difficile colitis is a pretty good reason to take it. In case it does cause trouble, your doctor can also consider vancomycin treatment which is more effective and does not interact with alcohol.
