Can S-adenosyl Methionine-E Cause High BP?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: I had minor knee surgery about 1 and a half years ago and Sam-E helped a lot. Lately my blood pressure, which is usually normal (120/80) or slightly higher, has been more like 140 to 150 over 85. I stopped taking Ibuprofen for the same reason. Might XXXXXXX E be the culprit? I do tend to be active and athletic and plan to stay that way.

Yes it can

Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

I am Dr Vaishalee, MD Pharmacology and will try to help you as best as I can.

SAM-E is S-adenosyl methionine-E. Theoretically it can cause higher levels of serotonin. If taken with Monoamineoxidase-inhibitors or selective serotonin receptors inhibitors, it can potentially cause serotonin syndrome. In both cases, hypertension can happen.

I have tried to find studies on this topic. I could not find any study confirming this. Most studies state that it is safe. I think more and larger studies should be undertaken to look for its side effects.

My opinion is that it should be avoided in hypertension. If its being given with antidepressants, extra precaution should be taken.

Hope it helps.
