Can STDs Cause Uterine Wall Thickening?
Question: Thank you for your time Dr Rynne. I am 55 y/o female who has never been pregnant and has a family hx of uterine cancer (paternal aunt w/ stage III-IV uterine cancer at age 55). Details unclear. That generation doesn't discuss such things. My aunt survived...another 43 years and died of natual causes. I just came from my gyn who said I had thickening of the uterine wall and needed a ultrasound. I know this can be a normal part of menopause which I am clearly in the midst of. My question is - can this in any way be linked to STDs? After 6 years of marriage I have very recently learned that my husband is a sex addict and has been with multiple high risk women throughout our entire marriage. He's uses condoms but is also a heavy drinker and therefore even more unreliable. We had unprotected sex on occasion most recently 3 months ago. FYI..I left him. I know STD's can increase your risk of certain conditions and cancers. My blood tests & pap were taken yesterday. US scheduled for 3 wks from today but will try to change that to next week. I apologize for the lengthy email. I felt you needed all the details.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Brief Answer:
STD's can cause uterine wall thickening.Need an early US.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam.
I understand your concern.
Yes certainly STD's run a very high risk of pelvic inflammatory diseases which can be shown on uterine endometrium.
But equally menopause can also be responsible for such changes.
The differentiation can be made only though Pap and Ultrasound.
I recommend you to have your US at the earliest and not after 3 weeks.
Further management largely depends on test results.
Post your further queries,if any.
Thank you.
