Can Septra Lead To Painful Urination And Sensitivity When Allergic To Sulfa Drugs?

Question: Hi Doctors,
I am a 63 year old male in excellent health who has developed acute prostatitis from bacterial infection. Began on return from trip to Mexico (prior to this I was getting up 3-4 times to urinate) and symptoms were burning sensation urinating, chills and fever/headache. No others ones. Was given Septra by my doctor although I have had bad reactions in past to Cipro and other Sulfa based products. Could not sleep due to frequent urinations and had strong pain during urination. Spoke to doctor about this and he suggested using Phenazopyridine to help with pain. Did this and pain continued and got worse with much sensitivity in urinating.
Are these symptoms a byproduct of this drug as it treats infection or is this an indication of an allergic reaction? Two nights of little or no sleep is not helping. Should I continue taking this drug (perhaps lower dosage) ? What other drugs are available that may help based on past history?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
I think the best drug for you will be Flavoxate
Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,
I think the best drug for you will be Flavoxate three times a day. This will relieve pain.
Phenazo pyridine is not helping and should be stopped. The exacerbation in symptoms may not be due to it.
I hope antibiotic is being continued. You should take Omeprazole twice a day with it to avoid reaction.
You can also take some Tylenol.
Please revert back to me.
